A new GT 40 replica manfacturer in South Africa called Bailey Edwards Cars. The company has been running for a year producing kits and completed cars for export and the local market. Two types are availible called the "BEGT 40 roadster" a road going version and the "BEGT 40 Le Mans" a racing version.

The BE GT40

The Bailey Edwards GT40 is a totally South African designed and built replica of the legendary 1960's Le Mans Winner. The Chassis and suspension was designed by an automotive engineering graduate and has a torsional stiffness of 11500Nm/deg.


The front suspension is a fully independent double wishbone type. The rear is also an independent double trailing arm with transverse top link and lower wishbone. The suspension also has adjustable coil over shocks and anti-roll bar at front and rear. Choice of suspension mounting is either standard rubber mounted bushes or fully adjustable set up with rose joints.


Two types of brakes are offered, standard ATE calipers with 260mm vented discs (as on BMW 3 Series) or 4 pot AP Racing calipers with 305mm vented discs. The rims are 15-inch BRM alloys with center pin knock-on and peg drive as on the original.

The original style body comprises of 8 molded fibreglass sections using acrylic resins.

The interior has original Smith Gauges, 13 inch 3 spoke steering wheel as well as original floor mounted Tilton pedals and seat. Air conditioning is also available as an option. Other options include 4 point racing harnesses or standard inertia reel seat belts.


The chassis was designed to take a small block Ford V8 engine matched to a "Porsche Type" transaxle gearbox, which can be supplied on request.

The kit includes 7 sections, which are all clearly labeled and packaged for easy assembly. A complete instruction manual details the assembly of the car in a logical order from start to finish. The kit can also be bought in stages. All components are unpainted, engine and gear box, interior carpets and dash upholstery are not included. An estimate for these remaining items would be as follows, prices depend on their specification.


Engine and gear box +/- R30000 - R80000
Carpets and upholstery +/- R5000 - R8000
Paint work +/- R8000 - R15000

Every nut and bolt is included except for the items previously mentioned. This Package will ensure an excellent quality final product that drives and performs in many ways better than the original.

The BE 'GT40 roadster' is R230 000

The BE 'GT40 Le mans' is R280 000 (with rose joints, AP brake system, Racing harness etc)
